An image of a red flag, representing socialism, on the left hand side, and a US flag, representing neoliberalism on the right hand side.
Ideologically at odds? Maybe that’s a red flag.

Socialism and liberalism are going to be at odds with one another from time to time. The fundamental aspects of socialism require the abolition of capitalism. That doesn’t mean no more buying and selling, markets are fine, commerce is fine, it just means no more private ownership when it comes to public entities.

In short, workers will own businesses, the public will own utilities, a socialist system focuses on benefiting the people rather than the capitalist system of benefiting landowners and wealth aggregators.

So there are going to be times where I am going to disagree with liberal positions when it comes to economics, because socialism does not make a distinction between social and economic strata, it only recognizes class.

As a result, there is no need for division between identities (cultural, social) in an effort to distract people from the wealth aggregators taking the fruits of their labor.

Socialism isn’t a perfect system, but then no human system will ever be perfect. Utopia exists in fantasy films, not in human social systems. The striving for equity for all, though, is a continuous effort, not an end goal. I would wager than even 100 years from now humans would still be finding issues to fix even as it seeks to address inequities in the here and now.

I am also posting this on Facebook, and so my Facebook friends know this is a kind of wordy post, and Facebook shies away from these kinds of things to cram as many ads and shiny things in your face as much as possible, but I just wanted to explain a few key ideas about socialism and why it’s essential we move away from capitalism.

Yeah, sometimes we’re going to disagree, between liberals and socialists, but my end goal is to see you all happy, safe, and thriving as a human being. My goal isn’t to exploit you, but to support you. We need each other. We must learn to depend upon one another.

Humans have always done best when working as a group. This notion of hyper-individualism being the solution to our lives is foolish. You putting out your house fire on your own does not change the problem that the entire neighborhood is burning to the ground, and it’s only a matter of time before your house catches fire again.

Start thinking in terms of “how can we help each other?” instead of competing with one another for the few resource crumbs the people at the top have allowed to fall off their tables.

We provided them the food on their table, they only have it by virtue of claiming the table and all of our labor as theirs to use. It isn’t so. It is OURS. We should claim it and distribute what is on it to everyone.

I’ll get more into this kind of subject over time, but I think this will work for now.
